Lamborghini Celebrates 50 Years With a Triple Celebration

How do you imagine spending your 50th birthday? A party with family and friends? A slice of cake and a stiff drink? A holiday in Mauritius with the family? Lamborghini turned 50 earlier this month, and that’s exactly how they didn’t celebrate.

True to form, the larger-than-life car manufacturer celebrated in an unashamedly over the-top way. As well as creating a limited edition model, which would have been sufficient for most car producers, they drove a cavalcade of supercars around Italy, before culminating in an end of trip party where they unveiled a one-off concept car. Now that’s how you celebrate half a century!

Reflections On A Non-Major Auto Show

By Kevin Miller

11.07.2008

Every November, the Puget Sound Auto Dealers Association puts on the Seattle Auto Show. The show is largely a retail event, with mostly dealer-showroom vehicles on display, mostly dealer sales staff on hand to answer questions, and very little that a high-falootin’ auto writer like me hasn’t already seen. All the same, that many cars in one place is certain to draw me in. So I found myself driving through heavy Seattle rain on a Thursday afternoon to get to the show.

Happily the Volvo stand was just inside the front door. And among the handful of Volvo vehicles on display was an XC60 T6. The XC60 won’t hit showrooms until sometime in late winter or early spring of 2009, but when it does it should be a serious contender in its class of mid-sized, 5-seat crossovers. The XC60 on display had very soft two-tone leather upholstery, class-leading interior plastics, and a real oak “floating console” which was incredibly artful. The 281 HP T6 should move the XC60 nicely. It was a pleasant surprise to see that vehicle on Volvo’s stand in Seattle, but Volvo needs to drum up customer excitement however they can. The XC60 is a good way to do that. Continue Reading →

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia

Lamborghini’s Newest Police Car is A Little Bit Cooler Than A Crown Vic or D.A.R.E. Camaro

By Kevin Miller

10.24.2008

In 2004, lucky Italian police officers had a Lamborghini Gallardo to their vehicle fleet. That original Gallardo police car has clocked nearly 87,000 miles of patrol and transport duty on the motorways of central and southern Italy. In 2005, a second Gallardo entered police service around Bologna, and its odometer now shows more than 62,000 miles. Aside from regular servicing, evidently neither of the super police cars has required major repairs.

Today, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. donated a police version of the company’s newest super sports car, a 560 HP, 203 mph, all-wheel-drive Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia, to the head of the Italian State Police. The car is painted in the required blu polizia paint scheme, with white stripes and lettering that follow the Gallardo’s unique angles. The light bar on the roof of the Gallardo was aerodynamically optimized for the vehicle’s high top speed. Four sirens are integrated into the front and rear of the Gallardo to let motorists know the supercar is coming.

This car will replace the original police Gallardo which entered service in 2004. Its main patrol beat will once again be central and southern Italy, primarily on the motorway between Salerno and Reggio Calabria. Remember that for the next time you’re speeding through Italy, as whatever you’re driving will be unlikely to escape the police Lambo. Continue Reading →
