Lawmakers in the United States as well as regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have often been critical of certain vehicle technologies that have the potential to distract drivers while they are behind the wheel. The automakers have issued a response of their own to this recent wave of criticism by saying that the NHTSA should expand their crackdown on electronic distractions to also include outside electronic devices such as smart phones and other hand held devices.
2013 Ford F-Series Super Duty Revealed
Few things are more polarizing than luxury heavy duty trucks. To create one, a manufacturer has to take one of the most utilitarian vehicles in its lineup and slather it in leather, chrome and heated elements. For 2013, Ford has announced that its Super Duty line of F-Series pickups will be refreshed, and a Platinum trim level will be available for the first time. While the leather and chrome might get the most looks, its the also new for 2013 version of Ford MyTouch that has piqued our interest.
Nissan May Revive Datsun Brand
Speaking of reviving dormant nameplates, word from Japan’s Nikkei business daily newspaper is that Nissan is considering a revival of the Datsun name. The report has not been confirmed publicly by Nissan, but the key point is that unlike the last time we had a Datsun brand, this time it won’t be sold in North America. It will be sold in Russia, India, and Indonesia.
BMW Renewing Efforts To Resurrect Triumph Brand?
Is BMW looking to possibly revive the Triumph brand for another run? Rumors about such a possibility have festered for well over a decade, but if a recent report out of the United Kingdom is to be believed, The Bavarian automaker could perhaps be exploring this option once again.
Peugeot and GM Discuss Potential Alliance
According to comments from French labor minister Xavier Bertrand last night, French automaker PSA Peugeot Citröen is in the midst of talks with GM on a far-reaching alliance. While the outcome of the talks is unlikely to include any cross-shareholding arrangements (such as Renault and Nissan have, or (ahem) Volkswagen and Suzuki do), it may help both companies deal with serious problems in Europe.

Toyota, Subaru Unveil Lightweight GT86 RC and BRZ RA Models
By Carl Malek
When Toyota unveiled the GT86 (AKA the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ) it was plainly obvious that the Japanese car firm had ambitious plans for its newest sports car project, which is the first product of the company’s partnership with Subaru. Now Toyota and Subaru have written the next chapter in the GT 86/BRZ story with the official unveiling of the Toyota GT86 RC and Subaru BRZ RA models.
Chinese Knock Off the Ford F-150
By Chris Haak
These may be some of my favorite kinds of stories to write about. My very limited understanding of Chinese culture , gained from talking to a few Chinese friends, is that if you give them something and tell them to make their own, they will find a way to duplicate it. You have to be specific, though, or you will end up with something that looks very much like the original, but is quite different under the skin. The thinking is, why innovate on design when there’s a perfectly good design there to work with?
The Australian Auto Industry Is In Jeopardy
By Chris Haak
When I think of Australian cars, my thoughts immediately go to the likes of the Holden Commodore/Calais/Caprice and Ford Falcon, and all of their related derivatives. Then the next thought that comes to mind is a tricked-out HSV-fortified Maloo R8 (pictured here) with its 6.2 liter LS3 V8 underhood. They’re charming cars, and fun to drive (at least the old Pontiac G8 version of the Commodore was). Unfortunately, they’re also dinosaurs in a world where small displacement, forced induction, and front wheel drive is the norm.
Ford Expands Manual Transmission Availability On Ford Focus
By Carl Malek
Following in the wake of Chevrolet’s recent announcement of a manual transmission option throughout most of the 2012 Cruze model lineup, Car and Driver magazine reports that Ford is also planning to expand availability of a shift-it-yourself 5 speed manual transmission to Ford Focus Titanium models. This announcement should please enthusiasts that wish to row through the gears themselves when the road get twisty.
