Following a leak of images earlier yesterday, BMW has officially unveiled the 2014 BMW X5 which is an evolutionary update of the X5 that features revised exterior styling as well as a reworked cabin that promises to give buyers better versatility and luxury.
The exterior styling of the 2014 BMW X5 is a subtle mixture of the current generation’s basic profile with cues from its smaller cousin the X3 as well as select traits from the current generation 3 Series sedan that all contribute to the car’s freshened appearance. The front fascia of the X5 borrows the 3 Series’ “connected” headlamps that appear to branch out from the familiar twin kidney grilles, while the headlamps themselves are surrounded by four LED accent rings with the LED fog lights located just below them. Following in the footsteps of the redesigned 5 Series sedan, the 2014 X5 will feature Xenon headlamps as standard equipment, however buyers can choose to equip the X5 with optional adaptive LED headlamps for improved nighttime visibility and style. The rear fascia continues this subtle mixture this time emphasizing its X3 derived traits by adopting a more streamlined appearance that is also much more cropped than the previous generation X5. LED tail lamps are standard equipment, and incorporate new “aero blade” elements that work together with the roof mounted spoiler to cut down the SAV’s wind turbulence. The X5’s aerodynamics are improved even further thanks to new “air curtains” that redirect the air under the car to flow around the wheel arches, while “air breathers” located on each of the front fenders channel even more air under the SAV.
The interior of the X5 also channels much of its influence from the current generation 3 Series, especially in its basic layout, better material quality, and overall profile. The reworked dashboard now incorporates a 10.2 high resolution screen that features standard navigation as well as real time traffic information, BMW’s mobile office features, and the company’s familiar suite of apps that allow drivers to access Twitter and Facebook via their iPhone. When equipped with all-wheel drive, the screen also displays roll and pitch as well as a digital compass. Leather trim will be standard equipment on all V8 equipped X5’s but will remain an option on all other models. A third row seat still remains an option for buyers that need more people space, but for the first time ever the company will offer its “Comfort Seats” that feature premium leather trim and adjustable backrests as an option. Audiophiles looking to upgrade from the X5’s factory stereo can choose from either a premium Hardon Kardon unit, or a new 1200 watt Bang & Olufsen sound system that boasts 16 speakers for an unforgettable listening experience.
Performance for the 2014 BMW X5 comes from a pair of gasoline powerplants that promise to retain the X5’s reputation as a fun to drive vehicle. A standard 3.0 liter turbocharged inline six which is good for an even 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque is available on the Sdrive35i as well as its AWD sibling the xDrive35i. Buyers that crave more power will be pleased with the xDrive50i, which features the company’s familiar 4.4 liter twin turbocharged V8 that pumps out 445 horsepower and a stout 480 lb-ft of torque. BMW claims that the inline six can complete the sprint to 60 mph in a swift 6.2 seconds while the bigger V8 completes the same task in only 4.9 seconds. Regardless of which engine is chosen, all X5 models will be equipped with BMW’s tried-and-true 8-speed automatic gearbox that features a built in launch mode as well as a fuel saving “eco pro” mode for maximum fuel economy. Auto Stop/Start technology is standard equipment across the X5 model lineup.
The handling of the 2014 X5 has can be sharpened thanks to a new Dynamic Handling Package that features dynamically controlled dampers as well as a self leveling rear suspension that works together with active roll stabilization software to reduce body lean during sharp cornering. M Sport variants take things one step further by coming equipped with a model exclusive Adaptive M Suspension system that includes a built in sport plus mode that firms up the suspension even more while also sharpening handling at the same time.
Look for the 2014 BMW X5 to arrive in dealer lots sometime in late 2013, with a diesel variant arriving shortly afterward. That particular model, known officially as the xDrive35d, will arrive equipped with a 3.0 liter diesel inline six engine which is capable of delivering 255 horsepower and a potent 413 lb-ft of torque while urea injection and other emissions scrubbing equipment cut down on pollutants. BMW has also not released official pricing for the 2014 X5 but expect it to not radically deviate from the existing pricing ladder already in place on the current generation X5.
