Jaguar Unveils Limited-Production, Track-Oriented XKR-S GT

Jaguar’s XK coupe has always pushed the envelope when it came to luxury and performance, and on that front the company has unveiled the latest iteration of this sleek coupe, the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT which was designed for maximum performance in road course racing.

The exterior styling of the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT retains many of the basic features first seen on the XKR-S, but the engineers at ETO specialty vehicle group (the company’s in-house tuner) have made several upgrades and revisions to sharpen the car’s performance even further. The nose of the XKR-S GT has been equipped with a new wraparound carbon fiber air splitter which is designed to improve the direction of air flow around the vehicle while carbon fiber dive planes and model-exclusive wheel arch extensions further aid airflow for maximum aerodynamics at a wide range of vehicle speeds. The rear of the XKR-S GT features similar upgrades and now comes equipped with a carbon fiber air diffuser to improve rear airflow, while a massive trunk-mounted carbon fiber rear spoiler provides optimum downforce and keeps the rear end planted during spirited driving.

Performance for the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT comes from the familiar 5.0 liter supercharged V8 that sees duty in the XKR-S. While overall output remains unchanged at a healthy 550 horsepower and an equally impressive 502 lb-ft of torque, Jaguar engineers focused their efforts on improving the car’s suspension and handling components to withstand rigorous track work. This was accomplished by fitting the car with new front and rear suspension arms as well as new wheel bearings, bushings, a reworked rear subframe, and other components. In addition to these upgrades, Jaguar’s active damping system has also been heavily reworked and now features new height-adjustable dampers while spring rates have been stiffened even further by 68 percent for the front springs and 25 percent for the rear springs. Rounding out the changes is a slightly wider front track and a new steering rack tweaked for higher ratios and greater road feel. The company claims that buyers will notice sharper responses thanks to these two particular upgrades. All of this muscle is channeled to the rear wheels through a 6-speed automatic carried over from the XKR-S virtually unchanged.

The interior of the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT also remains largely unchanged from the XKR-S, but Jaguar stylists have added several model-exclusive touches to help the GT stand out from lesser XK models. The interior features an all-black color scheme with red accent stitching and supportive 16-way power sport seats with leather and suede inserts. GT models also include steering wheel mounted aluminum paddle shifters for buyers that prefer to shift themselves.

Look for the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT to make its official debut tomorrow at the 2013 New York Auto Show with production limited to just 30 examples with 25 of them going to the U.S, while the remaining 5 will be shipped to buyers in Canada. Pricing for the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT will start at $174,000; the first shipments arrive at a Jaguar dealership near you in August.  In the meantime, the company has unveiled a short video of the car in action which can be seen below and stay tuned to Autosavant for live coverage of the 2013 New York Auto Show.
