Volkswagen has lifted the veil off of the latest iteration of the company’s ever-growing lineup of Up! city cars, the 2014 e-Up!, which made its debut earlier this week at the Annual Press and Investors Conference in the company’s hometown of Wolfsburg Germany.
Built on the five door variant of the Up! micro car (which we had the chance to drive last year), the e-Up! retains the familiar shape and basic styling cues seen in other versions of the Up!, but Volkswagen stylists have made several revisions to set the e-Up! apart from its gas powered siblings. A new LED lighting system wraps around the front bumper and gives the e-Up! a futuristic appearance while the revised door sills, front end, and under body components have been reworked to make the U-up! as aerodynamic as possible.
The interior of the e-Up! has also been lightly reworked when compared to other Up!s, and features gray-hued seats with bold blue contrast stitching for the seams. In addition to the uniquely upholstered seats, the e-Up! also features “special” leather and chrome trim which should give the car’s interior a slightly more upscale appearance than its siblings.
Performance for the e-Up! comes from a tiny electric motor which replaces the gasoline engine in other Up! models, and is good for a modest 88 horsepower and a stout 155 lb ft of torque with the electrons coming from 18.7 kWh lithium ion battery located in the car’s underfloor area. These figures allows all 2600 lbs of e-Up! to achieve a 0 to 60 time of 14 seconds before reaching a top speed of 84 mph. Volkswagen also claims that the battery has a 93 mile range, and can be charged to 80% of its maximum capacity in just 30 minutes which is a feat not seen in most other EV’s.
Look for the e-Up! to make its official public debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show this fall with initial deliveries for Europe scheduled to begin sometime in 2014.
