BMW has given fans of its stylish two seat roadster an early Christmas present with the unveiling of the 2014 Z4 Roadster, which brings a number of exterior and interior tweaks to the Z4 formula for the 2014 model year.
Exterior styling for 2014 has changed very little from the cues already seen on the current generation Z4, and retains the car’s long wheelbase, stylish hood, and the sleek low-slung rear end which also houses the car’s folding metal hardtop. However while it may seem that nothing has been radically changed by BMW engineers, look closer and some of the subtle updates (like the reworked grille surround) will make themselves known. One such change for 2014 is the addition of three new exterior colors to the car’s color palate. Buyers can now choose from either silver metallic, gray metallic, or a bold new color called Valencia orange metallic. The latter is only available on models equipped with the new “Hyper Orange” package that replaces the equally bold and unique “Citrus Yellow” package, and can be had with the other two colors listed above. Other tweaks include restyled headlights with LED running lamps, new hood scoops, and newly optional 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels.
The interior of the 2014 BMW Z4 has also seen a few minor tweaks for 2014 with the addition of a folding display screen for the familiar iDrive system, plus new gloss black inserts for the air vents that add a subtle hint of elegance to the cabin. “Hyper Orange” equipped models continue the orange onslaught with splashes of orange colored trim on the door panels and the lower portion of the instrument panel while the leather seats feature orange stitching and a handsome orange accent stripe to round out the package.
While the exterior and the interior have received subtle changes, the car’s excellent performance hardware has been left mostly unchanged for the 2014 model year. A 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine once again serves as the base engine in sDrive28i models and is good for a solid 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Buyers looking for more power can opt for either the sDrive35i or the sDrive35is which are capable of producing 300 and 335 horsepower respectively from their 3.0 liter inline sixes. Transmission choices will also continue into the 2014 model year unchanged as well with sDrive28i models sending their power to the rear wheels through either a six speed manual gearbox or an optional eight speed automatic, while sDrive35i buyers get to choose between the manual and a seven speed dual clutch gearbox. The top of the line sDrive35is will not get a shift it your self option for 2014 and will instead continue to be only available with the same 7-speed dual clutch transmission that sees duty in the current model.
After the 2014 BMW Z4 roadster makes its formal debut at the North American International Auto Show in January, it will begin arriving at a BMW dealership near you this coming spring. Pricing is expected to be announced closer to its Detroit debut.
