2012 BMW 1 Series Official Details Revealed Before Frankfurt Debut

Rather than wait until the Frankfurt Auto Show, BMW has decided to lift the curtain early on its upcoming 2012 BMW 1 series hatchback model.  Looking much more complete and aggressive than its predecessor, the new 1 Series boasts revised styling with brand new front end design that takes its cues from the not only the top of the line 7 series, but the 5 Series GT as well. The rest of the car is more or less an evolution on the same styling themes that made their initial debut on the previous model but the overall effect of the new design is rather promising and should make the new 1 Series look rather handsome to casual observers.

The new 1 Series rides on a longer 105.9 inch wheelbase.  This not only helps make the cabin of the new car roomier for vehicle occupants, but also helps increase luggage capacity by an additional 7 cubic feet. Further details regarding the interior are limited as of this writing, but the reworked interior will feature a brand new design, higher grade materials, and a choice of either a 6.5 inch or an optional 8.8 inch iDrive display screen. Other interior goodies to be offered on the new 1 Series include a collision warning system, speed limit detection, and the ability for the driver to connect to the Internet.

Under the bonnet of the new car, customers will have a wide variety of engine flavors to choose from when ordering their new 1 Series.  The first offering, a 1.6 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine, will be available with final outputs ranging from 134 horsepower to 168 horsepower, and the eventual introduction of a variant that is expected to produce 247 horsepower. Customers that opt for the 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder diesel engine instead will have figures of 114 horsepower, 141 horsepower, and 181 horsepower respectably. Regardless of what engine is selected for moving the 1 series, both motors will be connected to either a six speed manual transmission or an eight speed automatic gearbox. As is the case with nearly all of BMW’s lineup, the new car can be equipped with the company’s EfficientDynamics system. With the system in place, the car will be equipped with a engine start and stop system, and special regenerative braking. In the case of the new 1 Series, BMW claims that this system should allow the car to achieve 40.6 to 54.7 MPG, which decent eficiency for a car in its class.

The new 1 Series is expected to go on sale at your local BMW dealer later this fall (however, the hatchback is not expected to make the jump to US  shores anytime soon). No official pricing information has been released as of this writing, but BMW has stated that more information will be revealed at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show so stay tuned.

  2. Makes a lot of sense, depending on pricing, efficient use of space, fun to drive and fuel efficient. It would allow more people in the US access to a premium brand. Bring it over.
