Paris Show Preview: Volvo S60 and V60 R-Design

Volvo today announced R-Design packages for their new S60 and V60 sedan and wagon, that will make their debut at the Paris Auto Show at the end of this month. The S60 is already on sale in Europe, and is hitting US Volvo dealerships this month, in the T6 launch trim with 300 HP from a 3.0 liter inline 6 and AWD, delivered through a 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. Other powertrains will become available sometime after the initial launch of T6 models, but no manual transmission is planned for any S60 models in the US.
These R-Design S60 and V60 models, with the T6 powertrain, could be considered the spiritual successors to Volvo’s performance halo cars, the 2004-2007 S60R sedan and V70R wagon. In addition to bigger wheels, body kit additions, sport-bolstered seats, and blue-faced instruments, enhancements over the standard production S60/V60 include a strut tower brace, monotube rear dampers, 15 mm reduced ride height, 15% stiffer springs, 20% stiffer rear bushings, and a ridiculous 400% stiffer front tie-blade bushing. All R-Design models also get the DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) system with Corner Traction Control, a system that uses torque vectoring to properly distribute traction forces.
While the R-Design package will eventually make its way to North American showrooms across a range of S60 powertrains, the stylish V60 wagon is not destined for the US market, as Volvo has decided to discontinue selling non-crossover wagons here. That is a shame, because the V60 R-Design would, in my opinion, be the best looking model in the Volvo showroom. In any case, the R-Design package will sharpen the look of the S60 when it hits US dealerships in the coming months.
