It’s Official: Mercury Production to End Q4 2010

Well, as expected, Bloomberg for the most part got it right.  Ford Motor Company announced yesterday afternoon that its Mercury brand would cease operations this year.  Production of the last Mercury vehicles will end in the fourth quarter of 2010.

As we reported the other day, Mercury’s current four-vehicle lineup was already slated to shrink by two when the redesigned Explorer drops its Mercury Mountaineer clone this September, and when the Palm Beach, Florida favorite Grand Marquis drives off into the sunset in the left lane at 35 miles per hour with its left turn signal on after the 2011 model year when its plant closes.  Still standing were the Milan midsize sedan and Mariner compact SUV.  The Milan is still fairly fresh into its product cycle, having been renewed for 2010, but the Mariner likely would not have been replaced either, when the next-generation Ford Kuga crossover replaces the Mariner’s twin, the Ford Escape.

Ford had announced earlier this year that Mercury would offer a variant of the new 2012 global Ford Focus called the Tracer (at least its name would have begun with a non-M name (Mountaineer, Mariner, Marquis, Milan)), but that product is now slated to shift to Lincoln.  It may take a similar form to the Lincoln Concept C shown in Detroit at the 2009 NAIAS (pictured at left).

Ford’s press release predictably focuses much more on the expansion/renewal of the Lincoln brand, with “seven all-new or significantly refreshed vehicles coming over the next four years.”  It’s not clear when the “next four years” clock starts (or started) ticking, but there is mention of a next-generation Navigator full-size SUV, the previously-announced 2011 MKX, and the C-segment entrant built on the Focus platform.

The company plans to devote resources that had been spent on the Mercury brand on the core Ford brand, and to improve Lincoln products further.  Every Lincoln vehicle will have an EcoBoost engine option available, and there will be Lincoln-exclusive engine and transmissions available in the future.  Ford plans to impart fuel-economy leadership on every Lincoln vehicle as well, plus additional comfort and convenience technology such as MyLincoln Touch, active noise control, retractable glass roofs, and more.

Mercury’s end is definitely a milestone in the US auto industry, but should not come as a surprise to anyone.  There are no longer any standalone Mercury dealerships; of the 1,712 Mercury franchises in the US, 276 are Lincoln-Mercury stores (with no Ford franchise), 511 are Ford-Mercury stores, and 925 currently sell all three brands.  The largest area of concern, of course, are the L-M stores.  The company is delivering packets to all Mercury dealers this morning outlining the transition plan for the brand and formula-based compensation to be paid to each dealer.  Most Lincoln-Mercury stores will likely have to close down, acquire a Ford franchise, or merge with a Ford standalone dealer, though it’s possible that a higher-volume Lincoln dealer could survive selling only Lincolns, particularly with an expanded lineup.

For further evidence of Ford’s intentional starvation of neglect of the Mercury brand, we note that of the over 200 new cars that Autosavant reviewed over the past few years (, we’ve reviewed 20 Fords, 6 Lincolns – and just 2 Mercurys.  That proportion is actually reasonably close to Mercury’s tiny US market share; for the record, the ones we reviewed were the 2009 Mariner Voga and the 2008 Sable Premier.

Ford’s rebadge brand wasn’t always one.  The car pictured at the beginning of this article is just one example of that; it is a 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser Convertible, which paced the 1957 Indianapolis 500.  The Turnpike Cruiser (note – it’s not called the Corner Carver) was among the most garishly over-styled vehicles in a year of over-styled vehicles, yet the Turnpike Cruiser name lived on for decades as a running gag in Car and Driver magazine’s annual “Charting the Changes” feature.  (“Sable:  new seat trim and wheel options; restyled tail lamps.  Turnpike Cruiser:  still gone.”)  My father actually frame-off restored a Turnpike Cruiser convertible for a friend one winter when the car business was slow.

The last truly unique Mercury product was the front wheel drive, Contour/Mystique-based Cougar.  The Cougar was a decent little sport coupe, and had an interesting design that took the Ford “New Edge” design theme to new heights.  Since the last Cougar died in 2002, Mercury has sold nothing but Fords with satin-finish waterfall grilles, hawked in advertising by the beautiful Jill Wagner.

Ford says that it remains committed to servicing Mercury owners, and if you really do have a soft spot in your heart for those rebadged Fords, there are likely to be some sweet deals coming down the pike this summer and fall on the last remaining vestiges of Edsel Ford’s brainchild from 1939.

DEARBORN, Mich., June 2, 2010 – Ford Motor Company will expand and enhance its Lincoln brand lineup with seven all-new or significantly refreshed vehicles in the next four years as part of an aggressive growth plan focused on standout product design, class-leading technology and new powertrains – all aimed at competing with Cadillac and Lexus in North America.

Ford also will end production of Mercury vehicles in the fourth quarter of this year to fully devote its financial, product development, production and marketing, sales and service resources toward further growing its core Ford brand while enhancing the Lincoln brand.

“We have made tremendous progress on profitably growing the Ford brand during the past few years.  Now, it is time to do the same for Lincoln,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas.  “The new Lincoln vehicles will transform luxury for North American premium customers through an unexpected blend of responsive driving enjoyment and warm, inviting comfort. We will also offer our customers a world-class retail experience through a vibrant retail network.”

Lincoln’s hallmarks will be refined, modern design, the most fuel-efficient premium powertrains and industry-leading technology that create a unique driver experience both in the cabin and on the road.

“Profitably growing Lincoln in North America is an important part of our One Ford plan,” said Alan Mulally, Ford president and CEO. “Our Ford brand is gaining momentum and winning customers around the world.  Now, we are going to use the same laser focus to further strengthen Lincoln and deliver even more products luxury customers really want and value.”

Foundation Set
The future of Lincoln is building from a strong base that includes the all-new flagship MKS large sedan, the all-new MKT seven-passenger crossover and a significantly refreshed MKZ mid-size sedan – all now in showrooms.  The hybrid version of the MKZ will reach showrooms later this year and is expected to be the most fuel efficient premium sedan on the market.

Lincoln’s product actions continue later this year with the debut of the significantly refreshed 2011 MKX crossover, the first vehicle to feature MyLincoln Touch driver connect technology. 

This will be followed by another six all-new or significantly refreshed vehicles within four years developed with Lincoln’s DNA of standout design, precise and confident driving experience, class-leading technology and powertrains delivering top performance and fuel efficiency. 

Lincoln will be led by expanded product development and marketing, sales and service teams to support the brand’s growth plan and ensure it has a strong cadence of distinct products that are well positioned in the market.  Plans for Lincoln include:

  • Lincoln’s first-ever C-segment vehicle
  • New Lincoln-exclusive powertrains, including an all-new V-6 engine and advanced fuel-efficient transmissions
  • EcoBoost engines available in all Lincolns – from the Navigator full-size SUV to the new C-segment Lincoln
  • Fuel economy leadership with each new vehicle – leading to Lincoln emerging as the most fuel-efficient luxury lineup on the market
  • More useful technology and features than any other competitor – with a special focus on comfort and convenience.  New advanced features include: fully retractable glass roofs; adaptive computer-controlled suspensions; electronic, push-button gear-selectors; active noise control; and exclusive MyLincoln Touch driver connect technology 

“Lincoln vehicles will reward drivers with smooth, effortless power complemented by agile handling and responsive steering,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president, Global Product Development.  “The cabin is a sanctuary with segment-leading quietness, genuine materials and intuitive, useful technology.”

Lincoln has started gaining traction with customers, as evidenced by market share gains during the past five years.  Lincoln’s share of the retail U.S. luxury vehicle market has grown from 4.5 percent in 2005 to 6.3 percent through the first quarter of 2010.

In addition, Lincoln’s reputation with consumers has risen, with favorable opinion and purchase consideration reaching its highest level in the past five years.  Lincoln’s long-term durability was second only to Porsche’s in the 2010 J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Survey.

Mercury originally was created as a premium offering to Ford and was an important source of incremental sales.  However, the continued strength of the Ford brand – particularly during the past three years – has accelerated the migration from Mercury to Ford for many customers. 

Today, Mercury’s customer profile, pricing and margins are almost identical to Ford, but Mercury’s incremental sales have been declining.

The majority of current Mercury sales are to fleet buyers and customers purchasing through employee, retiree and friends and family discounts, which Ford anticipates largely can be satisfied by Ford brand vehicles.

Of Ford Motor Company’s 16 percent market share in the U.S., Mercury accounts for 0.8 percentage points, a level that has been flat or declining for the past several years.  That contrasts with the Ford brand, which has increased market share by 2.2 percentage points so far this year on the strength of new products and improved quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value.

Ford’s strengthening financial position – including the return to profitability and positive cash flow – allows the company to absorb short-term costs associated with the discontinuation of Mercury and to consolidate future product investments into Lincoln.

Today, there are no stand-alone Mercury dealerships in North America.  Ford is working closely with dealers to maintain properly located stand-alone Lincoln or Ford-Lincoln dealers, which will offer dealers and the company the greatest opportunity for long-term profitable growth.

New operational standards developed with the company’s dealers will facilitate a Lincoln customer experience that exceeds the expectations of North American luxury customers.

Personal Attention
Ford will work closely with Mercury dealers and customers during the transition, including providing existing Mercury owners with continued access to parts and service support at Ford and Lincoln dealers and by honoring current warranties, including Ford’s Extended Service Plans.

“We are 100 percent committed to supporting Mercury owners through Ford and Lincoln dealerships and working hard to keep them as valued customers in the future,” Fields said. “At the same time, we will work closely with our dealers to phase out Mercury franchises and continue to build a healthy, growing Lincoln with strong new products and a profitable dealer network that delivers a world-class customer experience.”

Mercury owners will receive additional details in the coming days explaining the transition and assuring them that Ford and its dealers will continue to provide all necessary parts and service support for Mercury products.  

Ford has notified Mercury dealers of the decision and provided details of a financial package that includes payment in exchange for resigning the franchise. 

Ford today also informed dealers of special offers on new Mercury vehicles that will be available through the summer to support the sell down of current Mercury inventory and remaining Mercury vehicle production.

“We are taking decisive action and moving into the future with the right plan to deliver profitable growth for all stakeholders,” Fields said. “These moves position us to continue building momentum through strong brands, great products and an unwavering focus on the customer.”

  1. I’ve always had a soft spot for The Big M, and this news is not surprising, but still sad. Mercury could have been so many things over the decades, if only Ford had actually committed to anything. The idea in they 80s of selling European Fords stateside was not a bad one, but why set up the Mercur brand at all? They should have just been Mercurys, at least it would have given and already established brand a real identity. In the late 90s into 2000s, the plan for Mercury was to be attractive to women and capture the new urban lifestyle. Again, not a bad idea, but where was the commitment? Edsel created Mercury, and decades after he was gone the brand was only kept around as a memorial to him. Fitting actually, since Edsel himself was never allowed to really fulfill his potential either.

  2. For all the great things Alan Mualally has done at Ford, this is his biggest mistake and should be called out for it!!!!!!!

    This ONE FORD = TUNNEL VISION, thought when they sold Aston, Jag, Volvo it would empower and recreate a new exciting Mercury!

    The same reason Edsel Ford created Mercury holds true today! It will be “Buick” that will show Ford Motor Company on how to grow a mid level brand!!!!!!

    Does anyone think building a Lincoln version of the Ford Focus, is a better idea than building a new Mark Series Lincoln rear wheel drive?????

    Does anyone think building Police Cars with the upscale Taurus is a better idea than build a say Mercury Cougar XR7 off the same platform????

    Anew Capri off the Mustang etc!!!!

    Ford is showing its strenth is cutting brands and cost, not create exciting cars taylored made for the public!!!

    Seems Kuzak IS NOT A CAR GUY and failed on this!

    For all Mualally done great at FORD, Killing Mercury could be what he it most remembered by!!!!!!!

  3. Charles, I agree, but think that both a new MK series RWD and Cougar should be built off of the Ford of Australia Falcon platform.

    The ‘Stang built Capris were awfull, even worse than the initial Fox platform Mustangs. (I had a 79 Stang, bad does not even begin…) The original Capris (no Marque, just Capri) was a small car, unfortuntaely, Ford has no small RWD platforms left.

  4. When I was a kid, my dad bought a new ’64 Mercury Monterrey (even though he was ‘an Oldsmobile man’). It was a great car, and I have fond memories of a couple of camping vacations to Canada when we drove it up from Nashville. It pulled a camper trailer smoothly and without complaint. But all in all, it was time for Ford to pull the plug on Mercury. Ford let it wither on the vine, much like Chrysler did to Plymouth. There just wasn’t enough product left to save. I hope they’re successful in expanding the Lincoln brand.
