Saturn Done and Out in Canada by 2010

By Brendan Moore

saturn-logo-smallSaturn has announced that all Saturn retail activity in Canada will cease by January 1, 2010. Saturn’s existing 46 dealerships in the country of Canada will close sometime during the rest of 2009.

“GM and Penske have been exploring the potential sale and distribution of Saturn vehicles in Canada. After careful and thorough analysis, it was determined that the business case did not support distribution of Saturn vehicles in Canada,” said GM spokesman Stew Low.

Penske Automotive purchased Saturn from GM in June, and as the new owner, decided to pull out of the Canadian market. Saturn sales in Canada are down 50.2% in 2009 compared to 2008. Saturn Canada sold 18,729 cars in 2008.

Saturn stated that the affected Saturn dealers in Canada were informed of the decision last week. All customer service, parts and warranty needs will transition to local GM dealerships in Canada.

Canada is losing brands lately, with Saab announcing a few days ago that they would also be exiting the country this year.

  1. Those Canadians have it tough. Some more brands will pull out, or not show up. Canada is a big country, but not a big market for certain makes.

  2. Makes you wonder if Fiat will put up their signs in Canada or just sell Fiats down below in the U.S.

  3. Interesting. Canada once had more model selection than the US, mainly based on more lax emissions and safety regs. For instance, the original Mini was available, as far as I know, through the 1970s in Canada, but US sales ceased in 1967.

  4. I hope other GM brand dealers readily absorb all of these “abandoned” Saturn owners…for warranty work and regular upkeep. Geez, when you look at it this way, it is really a great opportunity for GMC/Buick/Chevy dealers to increase service department business while building relationships for future sales.
