Kia KOUP Concept Hints at Future Production Car

By Chris Haak

03.23.2008

Thursday at the New York Auto Show, Kia showed its KOUP (pronounced as if it’s spelled ‘coupe,’ of course) concept and strongly hinted that the car would soon see production. In fact, the press release (which you can read in its entirety after the jump) makes several mentions to features of the car being “realistic.” Also, it’s not difficult at all to visualize this car slightly toned down for production.

The Koup (I refuse to capitalize the name throughout this article, the same way I refuse to do so when referring to the names of Saturn vehicles) is certainly an attractive vehicle, with sporty proportions that finally give some weight to Kia’s years-old claims of differentiating itself from its Hyundai cousin through aggressively-styled, sporty vehicles. I do, however, have to call Kia out on the Koup’s overall shape, as it’s more than a little similar to a Honda Civic Si’s. The C-pillar treatment, however, is not the same as the Civic coupe’s. I’ve previously criticized the lack of originality in Hyundai’s and Kia’s design, but at least the Koup looks better than its potential inspiration instead of worse.

The Koup concept is based on the Spectra compact car, but has a far more powerful engine. According to Kia, the Koup has a 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine with gasoline direct injection. It’s rated at a strong 290 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque. Since the rear wheel drive Hyundai Genesis coupe will have a four cylinder as a base engine, is it within the realm of possibilities that this engine could find its way under the hood of a Genesis model? 290 horsepower and a flat turbo-fortified torque curve is nothing to sneeze at. In fact, GM is considering adding a 2.0 liter turbocharged direct injection four cylinder to the rear wheel drive Camaro’s engine lineup.

I find the Koup more attractive than nearly any Kia I’ve ever laid eyes on, yet after staring at it for a while, I’m disappointed that in spite of some original styling cues that will hopefully make their way to other members of the Kia lineup, the car’s overall stance and shape are very reminiscent of the Honda Civic Si that it’s trying to knock down to size.

PRESS RELEASE

KIA DEBUTS KOUP CONCEPT AT 2008 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW
Design Cues, Indicative of an Emotional and Powerful Driving Experience,
Reflect Brand Evolution

• Distinctive “check mark” shape furthers the performance-inspired appearance
• Realistic interior design makes KOUP a true driver’s car

NEW YORK, March 20, 2008 – Combining youthful exuberance with a sporty and sleek design, Kia Motors America (KMA) today globally debuted the KOUP concept at the 2008 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) during a press conference at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Illustrating the shape and evolution of future Kia vehicles, the simple yet bold and aggressive KOUP exterior is complemented by its realistic and sleek interior design. Originating from the Kia Motors America Design Center in Irvine, Calif., the KOUP concept embodies Kia’s philosophy of “Exciting and Enabling” with its balanced proportions and fluid design set to evoke an emotional driving experience.

“The Kia KOUP concept represents the future of the Kia brand and its dynamic vehicles that speak to our core philosophies,” said Tom Kearns, chief designer of KMA. “Kia strives to appeal to the emotional side of car enthusiasts who seek adventure and want to take a leap into the future with style and advanced technology, and the KOUP effectively delivers.”

First Glance

Curb appeal begins with the KOUP’s balanced proportions and fluid design. From the tab-shaped and purposeful upper grille to the high-tech and pragmatic headlamps, the front fascia’s form gives the vehicle a bold and aggressive stance.

The KOUP features an uncomplicated yet dynamic wedge shape along its sides stemming from its glowing, carbon fiber and black chrome enhanced LED lamp lenses.

While the KOUP’s overall form is simple and precise, it makes a design statement with positive tension created by a “swoosh” that swoops from the “C” pillar forward, down to the “A” pillar and flares all the way back around to the rear deck lid. A trailing horizontal lip along the deck lid tapers up toward the outer ends to meet up with the swoosh from the beltline. The rocker sill has a distinctive “check mark” shape and prominent wheel flares that give the KOUP a strong, lowered stance. The short overhangs and wide stance reflect its well-balanced and responsive character.

No element of high-style design is missing in the KOUP concept as illustrated by its greenhouse-integrated, panoramic-view glass with two panels extending from the windshield through the roof to the backlight, appearing as two parallel pieces of glass – similar to a fighter jet cockpit. Segregating the glass panels, an interior mood light runs the full length of the greenhouse. To further the performance-inspired appearance with sporty elegance, carbon fiber enhancements accent the KOUP’s chin spoiler, lamp lenses, cowl panel, side-view mirrors, rear bumper insert and rear diffuser, while flashy twin wheel spokes include carbon fiber inserts paired with an open design to show off the Brembo® calipers and cross-drilled rotors.

Inside the Cockpit

Conceived artfully and with graphic precision, the KOUP’s interior hones in on the desires of auto enthusiasts from the inward lean of the dashboard and Supervision instrument panel, enhancing the performance-inspired driving experience to the custom-designed, race-inspired steering wheel in front of a three-gauge instrument cluster. Carbon fiber accents on the shifter plate and seat tilt-adjust mechanism reinforce sporty performance.

Audiophiles and car enthusiasts alike will take heed of eight speakers, including large rear deck speakers matched to a juke box audio system, further harmonizing the driving experience. A built-in Bluetooth-enabled navigation system with Map On Demand (MOD) is just the beginning of the telematics services, including safe driving, car maintenance and life/assistance offerings.

The KOUP features a realistic interior design that integrates high-style materials, including rich and supple seat fabrics accentuated with concrete- and black-color trims. As a true driver’s car, the front seats contrast the rear seats with opposing colors and patterning and horizontal, padded silicone bars occupy the seat backs for extra comfort. High-tech details are integrated into the interior, including convenient smart key with push button start, and a six-speed automatic transmission with steering column-mounted paddle shifters.

Taking Flight

Powered by a commanding 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged engine producing 290 horsepower paired with a GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) twin scroll turbocharger for greater power and efficiency, the KOUP delivers astonishing torque of 289 lb-ft at a low 2,000 rpm sustained to 4,000 rpm. By injecting fuel directly into the cylinder under high pressure using the Kia GDI system, the intake charge is cooled and combustion behavior is improved. Improved combustion assures excellent fuel economy and low emissions. Lower grille openings enable additional air intake for extra power.

Built on a front-wheel-drive unibody frame, coil springs and stabilizer bars complement an independent front suspension featuring MacPherson struts and an independent dual link rear suspension to provide the optimal balance of ride comfort and engine responsiveness. An engine-speed-sensitive, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system adds the finishing touch for precise handling. In keeping with the KOUP’s sporty essence, Continuous Damping Control (CDC) for quick movements and sharp turns paired with a sport-tuned, four-wheel independent suspension and strut tower bar offer a tighter grip for more spirited driving.

Safety

The KOUP concept features all of the standard safety features offered in Kia’s regular production vehicle lineup including six standard airbags and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Electronic Stability Control (ESC) paired with CDC stabilizes the KOUP for maximum contact with the pavement. The large 245/40ZR19 tires complete the KOUP’s impressive package. Also included is adaptive front lighting and cruise control, adding to the KOUP’s advanced safety technology.

New York Auto Show – 2009 Nissan Maxima

By Igor Holas

03.22.2008

Nissan took the wraps of its all-new 2009 Maxima in New York. The flagship sedan finally gained some visual independence and quality separation from the mainstream Altima. The Maxima maintains its current front-wheel drive setup, but Nissan built a better car around it.

Up front, Nissan decided to take the risk with the headlamp shape, which is truly unorthodox, and as with the new Murano, I am still struggling with it. The rest of the exterior is sort of sedate, but classy. The car is well-sculpted and proportioned and devoid of any obvious missteps.

What the Maxima might lack on the outside is made up for on the inside. The interior is all new with a newfound level of materials, design, and features. In most dimensions, the interior actually surpasses the outgoing Infiniti interiors such as the outgoing FX, or the Q. As with the new Murano, the switchgear looks straight out of Infiniti with great tactile feedback and great looks. The best feature of the interior is the rear armrest – which neatly integrates controls for the air conditioning / heating and the heated seats. These buttons are neatly integrated into the armrest and look truly classy.

I was impressed with the Maxima. The exterior is refined and elegant, even if the nose styling is not exactly my cup of tea. The interior is very luxurious and upscale and makes this car stand out among its competitors. Luckily, unlike so many other recent Nissan redesigns, the 2009 Maxima looks nothing like its predecessors – it is not exactly daring, but it is different and new.

All-New 2009 Nissan Maxima Recaptures Its Place as the True “4-Door Sports Car” Premium Performance Sedan

– Aggressive Styling, Refined Platform, More Powerful V6, Cockpit-like Interior and Enhanced Quality Highlight Changes to Seventh Generation of Nissan’s Flagship Sedan –

The 2009 Nissan Maxima, which makes its world debut at the 2008 New York International Auto Show, marks a return to the longtime Nissan flagship sedan’s roots as a commanding 4-door sports car – a vehicle that is unique in both appearance and driving feel, with renewed relevance for today’s active and ambitious sedan buyers. In other words, the Maxima is back.

The all-new 2009 Maxima will be offered as two well-equipped models, Maxima 3.5 S and Maxima 3.5 SV, and is scheduled to arrive at Nissan dealers nationwide in early summer 2008.

“Maxima has always enjoyed a certain ‘duality’ – a unique fusion of sedan practicality with the soul of a sports car,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “In recent years, however, competitive vehicles have caught up with Maxima in ‘sporty’ looks and performance. For 2009, Nissan is reclaiming its rich 4-Door Sports Car heritage with an infusion of emotional design, driving excitement and advanced technology – creating a silky, stimulating sports sedan like no other on the road today.”

2009 Maxima: Reborn at the “Ring”
“Do-overs” are sometimes allowed in sports but rarely in the automotive industry. Yet midway through the development of the new-generation Maxima a mulligan was indeed granted. Rather than continue with an evolution of the previous highly successful Maxima design, the creators of the 2009 Maxima stopped and rethought the entire direction.

Inspired by the concurrent top secret development of the 2009 Nissan GT-R supercar, they threw away positioning words like “conservative” and “balanced” and concentrated instead on new concepts like “addictive performance,” “striking,” “commanding” and “powerful.”

High targets were established, including the goal of creating “the best performing front engine, front-wheel drive car in the world,” along with class-leading acceleration, braking, handling, workmanship and cockpit design.

“We aren’t walking away from the strengths of the last generation Maxima, which was rated the top-ranked vehicle in AutoPacific’s 2007 Vehicle Satisfaction Award for Luxury Mid-Size Cars and a winner of Strategic Vision’s 2007 Total Quality Award? for Best Medium Car Ownership Experience,” said Castignetti. “However, complacency breeds complacent vehicles. The new Maxima demanded taking risks in order to ultimately come up with a much more exciting and rewarding vehicle.”

Three key areas were singled out for change: exterior design, which needed to be more aggressive, with more personality and attitude; a “super” cockpit, creating an interior that combines a driver orientation with high quality, roominess and user-friendly technology; and class-leading performance, enhancing what previous generation owners called “Maxima-ness.”

To further push the performance envelope, the development team challenged themselves to concentrate their efforts on “emotional engineering” – to experience Maxima with the five senses in a purer, more visceral manner, rather than through CAD drawings and computer simulations.

As each designer and engineer set and exceeded higher and higher targets, they realized that confirmation of the results would require validation on the road. But not just any road. Members of the development team traveled to Germany’s famed Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit – not coincidentally the site of much of the GT-R’s performance development work – to test Maxima prototypes. Special attention was placed on body rigidity, suspension and steering, along with honing Maxima’s competitiveness against some well-established European sports sedans.

“A number of product changes came directly from the Nürburgring trials, including enhancements to the braking and transmission systems,” said Castignetti. “But more importantly, it gave notice to the entire Nissan organization that the new Maxima is back solidly in the performance arena where it rightfully belongs.”

Aggressive Design Adds a “Wow” Factor to the Sedan Category
While seeking to create a simple-yet-strong presence, the designers of the new Maxima’s exterior also wanted to re-assert Maxima’s breakthrough personality – establishing a “wow” level of style that would clearly distinguish it from segment competitors.

The exterior design theme for the new Maxima is “Liquid Motion” – focusing on the flow of its powerful and beautiful surfaces, like the undulation of a wave. The look starts with Maxima’s aggressive stance and powerful fender volume, which is not unlike many exotic sports cars on the market today. This deeply sculpted body/fender treatment is seldom used for mass market vehicles because of the engineering and manufacturing complexity required to physically accomplish it. Maxima’s new stance is created by a slight reduction in wheelbase and overall length, along with a wider front and rear track.

Maxima’s new look imparts a strong, premium presence. The large, wraparound L-shaped headlights add a unique dimension to the overall design, while the light surrounds suggest a powerful “turbine” appearance of energy and strength. The upturned headlight shape combines with a wide grille, large bumper opening and bulging “catamaran-style” hood to give Maxima a formidable expression, setting the tone for the rest of the vehicle.

The powerful Maxima form continues along its profile, with careful layering of the bumper, hood and fender parting lines. The polished, elegant motion spreads from the deep-waisted rear fenders through distinctive Maxima-style C-pillars and high trunk lid.

Dimensionally, versus the previous generation, the new Maxima measures the same width at the doors but wider at each fender, which not only helps project a sporty appearance but also allows a reduction in the visual gap between the fenders and wheels and tires. Maxima’s dynamic performance stance is accented by 18-inch and available 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with low-profile performance tires.

Another new styling feature is the available Dual Panel Moonroof, which is traditionally offered only in luxury segments. The Dual Panel Moonroof includes a front section that moves like a normal moonroof (positioned farther forward than typical), with a very wide opening to provide an open-air motoring feeling. There is also a fixed translucent rear section that provides light to rear seat passengers. The overall design gives the appearance that the entire roof is composed of black glass. The Dual Panel Moonroof includes dual power sunshades for both the front and rear glass sections, adding a level of convenience.

At the rear, Maxima features a new 12-LED L-shaped taillight design, with a pair of side marker bulbs for added visibility during night driving.

“Maxima’s breathtaking new exterior gives it a commanding, almost coupe-like appearance, with plenty of driveway appeal,” said Castignetti. “It’s one sedan that will definitely be noticed by the next door neighbors, along with a lot of other people.”

Maxima is available in a choice of eight exterior colors: Winter Frost, Super Black, Navy Blue, Tuscan Sun, Radiant Silver, Mystic Jade, Precision Gray and Dark Slate.

Leading-Edge Sports Sedan Performance Platform
For five previous generations, Maxima has been built on a front-wheel drive (FWD) platform. Yet with the new Maxima’s development team everything was open for discussion, including the benefits of front-wheel drive versus rear-wheel drive (RWD). Although there are well-known advantages of RWD in terms of sporty handling, it was ultimately decided that by switching Maxima from its previous platform to Nissan’s new “D platform,” which was first introduced on the current Nissan Altima Sedan, Hybrid and Coupe, the target Maxima performance could be delivered – without giving up the added FWD benefits of lower costs, lower weight and enhanced roominess versus a RWD platform.

“As demonstrated time and again with the new Altima, the new Nissan D platform is an amazing piece of engineering – providing responsive handling while virtually eliminating the torque steer often associated with high horsepower FWD applications,” said Castignetti. “For the new Maxima, we’ve continued to refine the D platform, creating what we believe is one of the best-performing front-wheel drive car in the world, far above other FWD vehicles in its class. It’s a level of performance that we think will be highly addictive.”

In creating driving performance worthy of Nissan’s flagship, the Maxima’s body and chassis engineering teams worked together to create a secure feeling, virtually no torque steer during acceleration and a level of nimbleness that ultimately makes a car fun to drive.

A range of enhancements helped achieve these targets, including increasing body rigidity and adjusting the wheelbase and track dimensions. Body rigidity was increased by 15 percent and front strut mounting rigidity was increased by 100 percent, with all-new structures added to the engine compartment and additional reinforcement applied to the instrument panel structure. Maximas equipped with the Sport or Premium Packages feature a panel behind the rear seat that improves torsional rigidity by 17 percent versus models with a fold-down rear seat (a rear trunk pass-through is utilized with this panel).

The 2009 Maxima has a wheelbase of 109.3 inches, a decrease of 1.9 inches versus the 2008 Maxima, and width has been increased by 1.5 inches to 73.2 inches. The front and rear track measurement of 62.4 inches represents increases of 1.4 inches front and 1.2 inches rear over the previous model.

Additional “D platform” enhancements include the use of aluminum suspension links, revised suspension geometry, new technology shocks, revised steering and suspension geometries, a lower engine mounting and application of a new Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission), all of which contribute to minimal torque steer and improved handling prowess.

A Refined Engine and CVT
Compared to the previous generation, the new Maxima offers more horsepower and torque, providing quicker acceleration response and a special “Maxima Sound” – a satisfying, sporty sounding exhaust note. For 2009, Maxima again features a standard 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 engine, enhanced and refined to take its driving performance to new levels.

The revised engine features a modular engine design with microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons, a resin intake collector, digital knock control, six individual coils (one per spark plug) and a cross-flow coolant pattern. Also utilized are a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), a variable induction system, a silent timing chain and electronically controlled throttle.

In refining the award-winning VQ-series V6 for use in the new Maxima, engine development engineers focused on three areas – increasing air intake, increasing fuel burn efficiency and lowering exhaust backpressure. Steps utilized to improve air intake included increasing intake manifold collector port diameter, adding a second power valve in the intake manifold, changing intake collector material to resin for less mass and more flow, redesigning the shape of the intake valves and increasing the throttle chamber diameter. Fuel burn efficiency was improved by increasing the engine’s compression ratio to 10.6:1 (from 10.3:1), changing the piston shape for reduction of friction and weight, and adding exhaust-side continuous valve timing control (quad valve timing system). Exhaust backpressure was reduced through optimizing the exhaust system layout.

The 2009 Maxima’s 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 is now rated at 290 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque (estimated), increases of 35 horsepower and 9 lb-ft of torque over the 2008 Maxima.

Significant development time was also spent on enhancing the sporty engine sound for an increased “exhilaration feeling.” The new Maxima also utilizes additional sound absorption material and a new “sound creator” to enhance induction sound. Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance has been improved through a number of measures, including adoption of a new six-point engine mounting system. The system, which replaces the previous generation Maxima’s four-point mounting, includes upper and lower torque rods, high rigidity front and rear aluminum brackets and front and rear switchable control mounts to improve NVH performance under high engine torque conditions.

All 2009 Maximas come equipped with a revised Xtronic CVT™ with manual mode, tuned specifically for Maxima’s sporty driving character. The Maxima development team finessed the previous CVT design to improve responsiveness and strike a balance between sport and comfort, ultimately creating a transmission that provides a true synergy between engine and transmission, along with smooth, responsive and efficient operation.

For drivers seeking the utmost in vehicle control, a new “Ds mode” (drive sport) has been added to the CVT for 2009. “Ds mode” is an electronic control logic, that enhances sport driving through increased acceleration feel with higher engine revolutions, automatic engine braking and maintaining engine speed during cornering.

Ds mode takes advantage of the CVT’s infinite selections of available gear ratios and is able to select the right gear, the right time, all the time. This enhances the emotional, sporty feel while driving on canyon roads or city streets. Whether it is upshifting through the gears while accelerating, or automatic engine braking (downshifting) when coming into a corner, Ds mode is able to match vehicle speed and engine rpm with the driver’s intended acceleration input. Ds mode, combined with the sound creator, creates an emotional experience not available on any other CVT vehicle.

Available paddle shifters, mounted on the steering column, allow manual transmission shift changes for varying scenarios – such as winding roads – while the driver’s hands remain on the wheel for optimum vehicle control.

“The enhancements to the new Maxima’s already industry leading CVT, especially the addition of the new Ds mode, help us realize the full potential of the Xtronic technology, including the controller and adaptive logic,” said Castignetti. “It’s like having an ‘automatic’ manual mode – with lightning quick gear ratio changes going into turns and auto gear hold out of turns. You’ve got to feel it to believe it.”

Fuel economy is estimated to be 19 miles per gallon City, 26 miles per gallon Highway (final EPA figures to announced at a later date) – similar to that of the 2008 Maxima, despite the 2009 Maxima’s 35 additional horsepower.

Advanced Suspension, Steering and Braking
Maxima’s suspension is designed to be both stimulating and relaxing, combining responsive handling with a comfortable ride.

The subframe-mounted strut/coil spring front suspension makes extensive use of lightweight aluminum parts. An X-type upper cowl structure helps establish front body rigidity for suspension mounting.

Maxima’s multi-link independent rear suspension design, also subframe-mounted, offers outstanding handling by minimizing camber change during cornering. The rear shock absorbers and springs are separated for minimized friction and the shocks are in line with the center of the rear wheels, providing excellent damping and minimal harshness. Front and rear stabilizer bars are standard.

Braking is provided by standard 4-wheel disc brakes with a 4-channel, 4-sensor, 4-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). The system features new vented rear disc brakes with larger rear rotors (versus the previous generation Maxima) and a variable ratio linkage for a secure feel

The 2009 Maxima features a new Twin Orifice Power Steering (TOPS) vehicle-speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering system, similar to that utilized on the Nissan 350Z. The system features high accuracy gear, which is designed to offer improved high performance response, along with ease of driving at low speeds and a stable feel at high speed. Maxima has the quickest steering ratio of any Nissan sedan (15.2:1) to help provide its sporty steering feel. A new strut tower brace also contributes to Maxima’s improved steering precision and rigidity.

Every 2009 Maxima offers standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and V-rated P245/45R18 all-season tires. The Maxima 3.5 SV model with Sport Package features 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with P245/40R19 all-season or summer performance tires.

“With major improvements in engine horsepower and torque, along with the many enhancements to the CVT programming and addition of ‘Ds mode,’ we expect the new Maxima to be among the best performers in class in terms of acceleration and driving feel,” said Castignetti. “Add in its tuned performance exhaust, the virtual lack of torque steer, nimble handling, controlled body movements and linear steering and braking feel, and Maxima stands out as the most exciting and exhilarating performance sedan in class.”

“Super Cockpit” Interior
Another challenge in designing a true sports sedan is creating an attractive, intimate, sporty cockpit feel for the driver without compromising the traditional sedan attributes of passenger comfort, roominess and utility.

The new Maxima’s interior design team developed an interior concept of “Super Cockpit, but with Space” – the feeling of a sports car with controls ergonomically close, yet with ample roominess and comfort for both driver and passengers. Key design words emphasized during development were “impressive and silky,” “high touch,” “craftsmanship” and “high tech.”

Every aspect of the interior layout, including the size and shape of touch points and placement of features, was improved for a better driving experience. The shifter lever, for example, was placed closer to the driver and falls easily to hand. This also allowed a cupholder to be placed to the right of the shifter device, not behind it. The transmission’s manual mode gate has been moved toward the driver for a more intuitive action.

To enhance the “cockpit feel” of the new Maxima’s interior, the center console has been raised, and a premium quality feel is provided through the extensive use of soft touch materials, as well as soft, deep pads where an arm or elbow may rest.

The high quality feeling is also expressed with “Daytime Illumination” electroluminescent meters, with a special tilting of the tachometer so engine redline is placed at the 12 o’clock position, and extensive use of chrome surrounds for the gauges, vent rings, vent knobs and audio switches.

The new Maxima’s three-spoke steering wheel is sport-oriented and its diameter has been reduced (compared with the previous Maxima) for improved feeling. Maxima Sport and Premium Package models feature a unique “parallel” pattern steering wheel stitching (versus the traditional baseball-style stitching) for enhanced grip.

Much development attention was spent on the 2009 Maxima’s driver’s seat, or “the Chair.” The special driver’s seat includes an available manual thigh extension for long distance driving, additional support in the side bolsters for good lateral support during sporty driving, as well as added seat height adjustability. The new Maxima’s seat height is 0.8 inches lower (at its lowest setting), which also enhances the sporty driver’s feel. The seat is also available with heating and cooling functions and premium leather-appointed surfaces with special stitching. Also available are power lower lumbar and memory function.

The new Maxima’s front and rear seats share a common design theme for added harmony and cockpit feeling. The front seatbacks include a new slim, sculpted design, resulting in additional rear passenger knee room.

The 2009 Maxima is available with two different rear seat layouts – a 60/40 fold-down rear seat with access to the trunk, and a fixed rear seat with center armrest pass-through for carrying long items such as skis or other sporting equipment. Three interior colors are offered for 2009: Café Latté, Frost and Charcoal.

“The new Maxima is more tailored and refined than any Maxima that has come before, while maintaining a high-touch, high-tech sporty feel,” said Castignetti. “Its craftsmanship is outstanding, as is the quality look and feel – making Maxima an easy vehicle to enjoy, even when sitting still.”

Comfort and convenience features include a standard moonroof, 8-way power drivers seat and 4-way power adjustable front passenger seat, dual-zone automatic temperature control, cruise control with illuminated steering wheel mounted controls, Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition, power windows and door locks, AM/FM/CD6/MP3 audio system with 8 speakers and an available Interface System for iPod

Maxima 3.5 SV models add leather-appointed sport seats, an advanced Bose® premium audio system with 9 speakers (including two subwoofers and a center channel speaker), speed-sensitive volume control and Radio Data System (RDS), HomeLink® Universal Transceiver, fog lights and outside mirrors with turn signal indicators.

Lamborghini Shows Gallardo LP560-4 to U.S. at New York Auto Show

By Mike Mello

03.22.2008

The day I get to drive a Lamborghini may really be one of the most exciting days of my life, if only because of how much these cars feed my imagination. I’m happy to indulge in the fantasy that is promised by the shape of today’s Gallardos and Murcielagos and only look forward to the possibility of piloting such a machine on the open road.

At the New York International Auto Show, Lamborghini introduced the Gallardo LP560-4 to the United States. Originally introduced just weeks ago in Geneva, the white LP560-4 with gloss black wheels was situated between two black Murcielagos: a roadster and a coupe. As told to the media, this new Gallardo has an improved 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds rather than the previous time of 4 seconds. Top speed is over 203 MPH. The engine is a 5.2L V10, producing 560 horsepower and the “4″ represents the all-wheel-drive system. Carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by 8 percent and weight has been reduced by 44 pounds. With over 7,100 Gallardos sold, the Gallardo coupe is the most successful Lamborghini ever produced. See many more images HERE.

New York Auto Show – In person with the Transit Connect Taxi

By Igor Holas

03.22.2008

We have already written about Ford’s new Transit Connect Taxi Concept, so we won’t bore you with all the specifications, details, and Ford’s pitch for the car again. All those details, along with a gallery of official images can be found HERE.

After reading about the Transit Connect and the new Taxi concept, I finally had a chance to experience this new vehicle in person. Ford had total of three Transit Connects on display in New York, all of them in fancy hypothetical outfits – one as a Jazz band vehicle, one as catering delivery van, and finally one as a futuristic New York cab.

Read more after the Jump.

The taxi takes the traditional requirements of a good taxi, forgets about the “tradition” built up by the Crown Victoria, and utilized the full potential of the tall and spacious van. It is hard to appreciate the small footprint of this car until you see it in person. While it is about five feet tall, it only takes up as much space as a compact car – significantly less than the Crown Vic, or the Sienna, two most popular New York cabs. Like the Sienna minivan, the Transit Connect provides easy entry and seating position without the need to dive into a low slung seat and scoot. Despite the small outside dimensions and the divider between the driver and the passengers, there is plenty of space for riders’ legs and feet.

The seats are reasonably comfortable, and would be fine for three adults on a ride to the airport. Behind the passengers is a huge open cargo space that bests anything available by the Crown Vic or the Escape. The space of almost perfectly rectangular, maximizing its utility, and is accessible by two swing-open doors.

Despite these improvements, the main innovation of the Taxi concept is in front of and above the passengers. The Transit Connect Taxi Concept was outfitted with two giant glass-roof panels that compete with Edge’s Vista roof for the ‘wow’ effect. From the hood, up the windshield, all the way to above and behind the passengers’ head, the ceiling is a continuous glass surface interrupted only by two thin crossbars. There is no need of explanation just how loved this feature would (will?) be by tourists just arriving to New York, LA, or Hawaii, being able to immerse themselves in panoramic views of their destination.

Another innovative feature of the Transit Connect is the divider between the driver’s cabin, and the passenger space – it is made entirely of a single piece of Plexiglas. Unlike the old dividers with only a small window, this new divider helps the car feel spacious, welcoming, and once again make the cab less of another necessary evil on the way there, and more of a part of the trip. The divider is equipped with a touch screen information center which could display weather, news, sports results, and stock quotes, accompanied by a fare display. The display also integrates a magnetic card reader and payment interface.

While I completely understand the demonstration-only purpose of this concept, I would like to suggest two additions to the interface: tourist-focused information on tonight’s events or shows, perhaps even with an interface for purchasing tickets on the go, and a GPS map. Cabbies might object to the latter addition, but the ability to see your position on a real-time map would definitely help ease the worried of being taken for ‘sightseeing,’ and the map could once again be enriched with tourist-focused information, such as restaurants, sights, and events nearby.

The driver’s workspace is definitely different from the old Crown Victoria, with a more upright seating position and taller cabin. The top of the dash is completely flat and level so it can serve as a shelf, there is another sizeable shelf above the driver and passenger, and the passenger seat folds down when necessary to serve as additional work space. This thoughtful and user friendly interior is nice, welcome departure from the outdated and thoughtless interior of the Crown Victoria, but once again, the true innovation is elsewhere. With Ford’s new Work Solutions built-in computer, Ford showcased a prototype of a built-in fare meter. Besides the fare, the computer includes hands-free calling, full access to the internet, and a GPS map.

We at Autosavant have been singing praises for the Transit Connect since even before it was officially announced for US market, and we will not stop just yet. The little van from Europe is incredibly versatile, and the Taxi concept showcases yet another market that could be served, and served very well by this Swiss army knife of cars.

Unfortunately, however, as good as the Taxi concept is, it is a no-go for New York. Mayor Bloomberg insists that starting next year all livery and cab vehicles in New York deliver at least 25 mpg; the minimum grows even further (to 3 0mpg) in 2010. The Transit Connect is powered by a small 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine, but with its weight, shape, and four-speed transmission, it delivers only 19 miles per gallon in the city, and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. That is decent for a medium-sized van/SUV, but not enough to satisfy Mr. Bloomberg. Ford submitted the concept for the City’s Cab of Tomorrow prize, but I am certain there will be no non-hybrids among the winners. While the New York City cab market is large, it is not the only one, and hopefully the rest of US, and perhaps outside the US, the Transit Connect Taxi can deliver on the concept’s promises.

New York Auto Show – Autosavant Interview with Jan Ake Jonsson, MD Saab

By Brendan Moore

03.22.2008

During the press days of the New York Auto Show, I had the opportunity on 03.19.2008 to speak with Jan Ake Jonsson, the Managing Director of Saab worldwide.

Mr. Jonsson was both candid and thoughtful in his comments about Saab, Saab’s recent missteps in the American market, and the new models that Saab will produce in the future.

We spoke about those cars, as well as the new BioHybrid concept. If you’re a Saaber, a Saabist, a Saabophile or something else that has an interest in Saabs, you might find it quite interesting. The audio interview is approximately 14 minutes in length. My apologies for all the background noise; the interview was conducted on the crowded floor of the auto show as Mr. Jonsson and I sat next to the new Saab 9-X BioHybrid concept.

New York Auto Show – 2009 Honda Fit

By Igor Holas

03.22.2008

Besides the 2009 Acura TSX (see more HERE), Honda brought the new 2009 Fit to New York. While it might seem the original Fit was revealed only yesterday, it has been selling outside US for five years, so its replacement was in order.

The current Fit has already been heralded as the leader in the B-segment, with well defined ride, well tuned engine and transmission, and innovative features like flip-up rear seats for transporting tall objects, such as bikes.

The new 2009 Fit improves upon the current model with a retuned chassis and suspension that delivers an even better ride, plus added safety features such as stability control and brake distribution. Moreover, the 2009 Fit includes an all-new interior providing more storage bins and more cup holders. Rare for a car this small, Honda is going all-out with electronic conveniences such as navigation and a USB, iPod and MP3 player interface. The new car is powered by an upgraded version of the current 1.5 liter four-cylinder engine linked to a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission.

I had a chance to sit in the car at the show, and the new car provides a nice update to the current car. The wheelbase was stretched, and the overall dimensions grew as well. This improved interior space, but moved the car away from its tiny, nimble, cheap, and frugal origins. The interior is still a little narrow compared to a compact such as the Civic, but there is quite a bit of legroom or all five passengers. The front cabin is thoughtfully designed with storage bins all over the place including a nifty penholder tray above the glove box, and a built-in cup holder on the dash-top.

For practicality and overall refinement the Fit probably can’t be beat. The cargo area is wide-open with a large hatch and very usable vertical space. The seats fold down as well as up, and overall provide more stuff-hauling capability that virtually any midsize sedan does. The new model adds a little additional space thanks to its larger dimensions, but otherwise does not tamper with this proven formula.

For fans of small cars like me, the new Fit is great news. The subcompact segment has been neglected for years, and while it is not necessarily re-invigorated, it has only one truly well-rounded and excellent entry – the Fit. It is nice to see that Honda did not spoil this excellent car with boneheaded moves. After all of the weird and bad turns Honda has made recently (the Acura TL redesign, the bland new Pilot) this excellent update to the Fit is a breath of fresh air. With more space, better powertrain, and on-par interior, this car should be stealing sales from the mediocre new Toyota Corolla.

All-new 2009 Honda Fit Introduces New Realm of Refinement to Subcompact Class
New Fit further refines interior functionality, enhances sporty feel, and adds safety features

NEW YORK, March 19, 2008 – The all-new 2009 Honda Fit, set to go on sale in the U.S. this fall, is making its U.S. debut at the New York International Auto Show, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. The Fit promises to further its leadership in the subcompact segment with top-of-class feature content, including an available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™; improved interior functionality, including one-motion dive-down rear seats; enhanced sporty demeanor through improved suspension, steering and body rigidity; and high levels of standard safety equipment, including Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure.

“Critics and customers alike have voted the Fit among the best small vehicles on the road,” said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda. “This new Fit raises the bar even further, taking what was already great about the Fit, making it even better and throwing in a healthy dose of refinement.”

Enhanced Comfort and Convenience
Dimensionally compact on the outside, the interior provides surprisingly large passenger and class-leading cargo space to maximize comfort and utility. At the foundation is an improved rear Magic Seat, now featuring one-motion dive-down functionality, which allows the rear seat to fold flat with the front seats in the rearmost slide position and without removing the rear head restraints. The seats offer multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations (tall object mode, long object mode and utility mode) in addition to the standard five-passenger mode. Additionally, a new hidden storage bin under the driver’s side rear seat provides a place to store small items.

Adding further refinement, Fit Sport offers an available factory-installed Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with Voice Recognition, featuring a 6.5-inch screen. All Fit Sport models feature a USB audio interface compatible with current generation iPods® and many USB storage devices.

“The goal is to provide entry-level vehicle customers with functionality and refinement that’s a class above,” said Colliver. “Buying a Fit is a choice, not a compromise.”

Fun to Drive
The Fit features a new 1.5-literi-VTEC™ 4-cylinder engine connected to either a 5-speed manual transmission or an available 5-speed automatic transmission, which includes steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters on the Fit Sport. The new engine is designed to offer the best balance of fuel economy and power. Larger 15-inch and 16-inch (Fit Sport) wheels hint at enhancements to the Fit’s suspension, steering and body rigidity, which are intended to produce sportier handling without sacrificing comfort.

Top-of-Class Standard Safety Equipment
The 2009 Fit adds Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure technology, available Vehicle Stability Assist ™ (VSA®) and active head restraints, to a top-of-class list of standard safety features. With Fit’s adoption of ACE, more than 94 percent of Honda vehicles sold in the U.S. will include the innovative body structure. When introduced to the 2009 Fit, VSA will be available in the lineup of every model Honda sells in the United States. Dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags, dual front-side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) and side-curtain airbags are standard equipment on all Fit models. All seating positions have three-point seat belts. Additionally, front and rear visibility is improved.

Standard active safety equipment includes an anti-lock braking system (ABS), with ventilated discs in the front and drums in the back, and electronic brake distribution (EBD).

New York Auto Show – Suzuki

By Igor Holas

03.21.2008

Suzuki used the New York Auto Show to reveal its third Kizashi concept. Suzuki is best known for its motorcycles and nimble small cars, and so it used the Kizashi concept series to test waters for a large sedan, crossover, and wagon.

The first Kizashi concept was a low-slung wagon, the second one was a taller crossover-type vehicle, and the third one is a sedan. The sedan looks the most production ready, but Suzuki has already announced that it will produce all three variants beginning two years from now and sell them in the US. This is excellent news, as the cars, especially the sedan, are simply stunning in person.

The Kizashi 3 is powered by a 3.6 liter V6 delivering over 300 horsepower to all four wheels, routed through a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The sedan awed audiences with aggressive, athletic stance and incredibly sculpted body. While the big “S” on the grille might deter some buyers, I think the Kizashi vehicles, will be the right cars for customers to overcome their badge-prejudice, and buy it.

LIVE! FROM NEW YORK: SUZUKI DEBUTS CONCEPT KIZASHI 3
NEW YORK (March 20, 2008)
– Performing onstage at this year’s New York International Auto Show in front of a packed house, American Suzuki Motor Corp. hosts the world debut of its sleek and athletic Concept Kizashi 3, which completes the company’s star-studded cast of media-acclaimed Kizashi concepts. In addition to the North American reveals of Concept Kizashi and Concept Kizashi 2, the global introduction of Concept Kizashi 3 coincides with Suzuki’s announcement that it will produce a sport sedan derived from the Concept Kizashi 3 design.

The Concept Kizashi series was developed by Suzuki’s Advanced Design Group to reflect a dynamic athlete in motion, taking design cues from a strong, honed physique while displaying the performance, strength and style befitting a flagship vehicle. The design theme began with Concept Kizashi, which made its debut at the 2007 International Motor Show in Frankfurt, and the Concept Kizashi 2, unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, which further revealed Suzuki’s new design language.

“Kizashi means ‘prelude’ in Japanese, and that’s exactly what this design represents for Suzuki from both a business and a product standpoint,” said Mark Harano, president, American Suzuki Automotive Operations. “Concept Kizashi 3 illustrates our brand character and personifies our heritage, design strength and engineering prowess. With customers in 192 countries and regions, Suzuki is truly a global brand, and the coming model carries on our mission to build the image of our automotive products in North America and eventually match our bikes’ reputation.”

Known primarily as a maker of small vehicles, Suzuki intends for the production derivative of the Kizashi series to serve as the company’s flagship vehicle, strengthening its current product line of small cars, trucks and SUVs with a sporting, more accommodating sedan. The future production model will be built at Suzuki’s brand-new Sagara plant in Japan, currently under construction, and provide an accessible alternative to the near-luxury segment. While a firm timetable has not been announced, Suzuki will deliver the Kizashi-influenced sport sedan to North American dealers by 2010.

The Concept Kizashi Series
Evoking the physical superiority and dignity of a world-class athlete, the Concept Kizashi series was developed to create a substantial presence that redefines the traditional performance vehicle and moves the Suzuki brand upscale. The overall design theme suggests physical strength from intense daily training, with the strong will, commitment and presence of a champion.

Each of the Concept Kizashi vehicles strikes a balance between driver comfort and sportiness, with roomy cabins melded to lean, dynamic exteriors. The hood and body style of all three Concept Kizashis hint at abundant engine power and wind-splitting aerodynamics, while the long wheelbase, aggressive wheel/tire combinations and abbreviated overhangs communicate a performance-oriented, energetic image. A powerful-looking body profile is incorporated throughout the series to convey underlying strength, with large wheels and a wide tread expressing a capacity for superior performance. Beyond its exterior architecture, the Concept Kizashi series constitutes a four-wheeled continuation of Suzuki’s exciting, performance-oriented motorcycle heritage, represented best by its dynamic, world-renowned line of GSX-R sportbikes. Those bikes, some two decades after their introduction, continue to dominate the sportbike segment and have achieved iconic status.

New York Auto Show – Pontiac

By Igor Holas

03.21.2008

Pontiac offered some of the biggest news of the New York show with three releases, all of them production models: the Solstice Coupe, the G8 Sport Truck, and the G8 GXP.

Pontiac’s display was attractive, but the true stars were the cars. The Solstice coupe was up on a pedestal and out of reach, but the lines are simply beautiful. The look is a little different from the original concept, but they work very well. Unlike the concept, the production car is a “targa” which means that you can remove part of the roof for almost-convertible driving experience. The Solstice coupe comes with one 30 pound roof panel that can be removed and stored at home. For a more portable roof, one can keep a soft-top piece in the trunk. Click HERE for official images of the Solstice coupe.

One part I like about the Solstice Coupe is the all-glass rear hatch. Just like the Volvo C30, and VW Scirocco, the hatch on the Solstice coupe is relatively small, but it is very stylish. Compared to the convertible, the Coupe’s weight apparently increased somewhat, but not significantly, and the driving dynamics of the roadster should be preserved – or so said GM.

The still-hot G8 sedan got two new siblings in New York – a truck, and an even more powerful sedan (G8 GXP). Like the basic G8, the two newcomers arrive straight from Australia where they are known as the Commodore Ute and HSV Commodore. The Sport Truck is a spiritual successor of the long-gone Chevrolet El Camino, with seating for two, and low, long bed. It is very attractive, and with the G8 GT’s V8 under the hood, it will be fast, but with only 3,500lbs of towing, limited payload, and no crew cab available, its appeal will be limited. A small truck, such as GM’s own Chevy Colorado, can do more, with better mileage, and probably for less money – but the Colorado does not look as cool, or burn as much rubber. The G8 Sport Truck is still not officially named, and Pontiac announced a public poll to pick the new name – this could turn to be fun – Pontiac G8 Chuck Norris anyone?

One thing a little disconcerting in the Pontiac lineup is the inconsistency in the interior look and feel. Pontiac’s relatively small lineup has cars built by GM North America (G6, G5, Solstice, Torrent), by Toyota (Vibe), and by GM Australia (G8 family). Each developed has their own interior philosophy and feel, and they do not resemble each other – at all. The feel of door handles, the design and position of light switches, the stereos, the seat controls – they are almost unique to each model, and this disconnect does not help build a brand. Hopefully, as GM moves ahead with their restructuring and unifying their global production, these issues will gradually disappear.

Overall, Pontiac put on a big show in New York and I think it will pay off. Much of the lineup is very deserving of its accolades, and should finally bring the brand some credibility and improved sales.

New York Auto Show – General Motors

By Igor Holas

03.21.2008

General Motors has been on the roll for a while now with significant introductions at each major auto show, particularly the previous two Detroit Shows. This year’s New York Auto Show was no exception to this trend.

The GM display occupied about a quarter of the main floor, as well as a big portion of the “truck floor” – their vehicles were impossible to miss. To add to this sheer size, GM has had a number of introductions for the Pontiac brand, and also prominently displayed many of their still hot, still interesting recent introductions. The Traverse is on a rotating podium, there are about five Malibus and in general, the GM display showed just how far this American giant has gotten in the past few years.

Among these attractive products were the CTS, CTS-V, and the CTS Coupe, the Provoq concept, the two Saab Prototypes (9-4x, and 9-x), the H3T “SUT,” the new Escalade Platinum and the Saturn brand with its fresh lineup.

The CTS truly is as stunning as it is good, but I have to say that Cadillac’s idea of “building the same car in three sizes” and the utter similarity between the CTS and the STS makes this car disappear in the Cadillac stand. The original inventor of this strategy, BMW, has moved away from it and now every model in the lineup has its own image, and its own appeal. I hope that as Cadillac moves to the second generation of its reinvigoration, their cars will gain better defined identities.

Saturn did not have much flash in the design of its stand, but the lineup made up for it. One of the freshest lineups in the industry stood strong on its own, without gimmicks. I had a chance to finally sit in the Astra and – oh boy – the interior is nice. The complaints journalists continue to repeat – weird button system, no cup holders, no armrest, etc are valid even if they aren’t important to many buyers. However, in this day and age, cars are very closely matched, and as good as the Astra is, there are cars just as good out there, and the little things might become deal breakers.
Finally, Saab had its full lineup on display, but focused on the two recent concepts – the 9-X sport-compact, and the 9-4X crossover (see more HERE). As mentioned already by Brendan Moore, both Saab concepts do a great job finally pointing this recently ailing Swedish brand, in the right direction.

On top of all this, there was Pontiac a brand so chock-full of New York introductions, it will get its own news piece, and together, the GM Empire showed its might, its progress, and its promise.

New York International Auto Show – New Volvo XC60 at a Glance

By Mike Mello

03.21.2008

If you drive a Volvo C30 and it’s become a bit small for your needs, but an XC90 is a little too large, Volvo has the new XC60 for you to consider.

The proportions, lines, and stance will feel right at home if you favor the current Volvo look, but even if you prefer a different kind of crossover flavor, the XC60′s shape seems to capture a dynamic sense of potential energy. The signature Volvo belt line combines with a handsomely sculpted line above the door handles that leads to a familiar, but still sensual taillight assembly built into the D pillar.

What really might catch your eye is the interior trim, with the XC60 on display in New York wearing dark grey and yellow-green hues. The yellow-stitching stands out against the grey leather and the seats feel good enough to sit on for any length drive. Who can say after only sitting in the XC60 for a few minutes, but many Volvo drivers rave about the traditionally comfortable seating. Is the back seat area slightly cramped? maybe – but certainly no trouble for kids or adults who are just heading out for the evening.

At first glance, the XC60 looks like a sure-fire vehicle that will keep present Volvo drivers in the brand, and will probably prove to be a serious competitor in the “small premium utility” segment. It’s important to note that Volvo’s new auto-braking system, called City Safety, is making its debut on the XC60 and aims to help reduce or even avoid low-speed frontal crashes at up to 30km/h. If the XC60 approaches a vehicle and the City Safety system doesn’t sense any driver indication of braking, the system will apply the brakes and cut back on the throttle.

City Safety works with Volvo’s Collision Warning with Auto Brake system, and can detect objects up to 10 meters in front of the XC60.
