Nissan Cube Coming to US

The Nissan Cube, a small, boxy car similar to the original Scion xB in shape and concept, will be coming to the US market according to Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. global design director Shiro Nakamura. The Cube has been sold in Japan since 1998.

The company, however, has not made an official announcement on the Cube’s impending arrival. Nissan had been studying whether to bring it to the US for at least two years, following the success of the Scion xB, but didn’t move very quickly because it didn’t have the urgent need to lower its buyers’ median age that Toyota did (Nissan’s age demographics skew much younger than many of its competitors do).

Personally, I prefer the looks of the Cube to the original xB, as its shapes (such as the rounded corners of the windows) are more interesting. Between the Cube and the current xB, it’s no contest against that vehicle which so frustratingly deviated from its original bantamweight version. It will be interesting to see how well the vehicle does, as it shares nothing visible but the chrome Nissan logo on the grille with any other Nissans sold in the US. Hopefully Nissan will sell the Cube in its original form to US buyers and not sell a fattened-up, bloated version of it. If they do, perhaps fans of the original Scion xB will buy these instead of the new xB.

  1. Isn’t the Nissan Cube a better performer as well? I know it’s no Nissan Skyline, but doesn’t it handle better and accelerate faster then the Toyota xB?

  2. According to this site, it only has an 85 horsepower engine, so I doubt it’s too quick. But it doesn’t really need to be.

  3. Would Nissan PLEASE get their act in gear and start selling these in the US! I almost bought a Versa last year, but decided to wait, and I’m going to need a new car REAL SOON NOW. I check for new news on the Cube every week, and am getting tired of the wait.

  4. As a current 1st gen xB owner I would love it for nissan to bring the cube in current for to the US. I hate the new xB.. the 2008 xb has deviated so much from what I love about my 2005 that I can’t beleive they even kept the name… so please please nissan bring the cube with say 100-110 horsepower keep the size the same and you will sell a zillion of the little things.

  5. I have a SCION xB (2005) and have enjoyed it from day one. For the price I paid I got anti lock brakes, power windows & doors, a Pioneer CD Player, and many more features. I have used this vehicle as a daily driver (28-30Mpg) and have done at least 7 cross country trips at (38-40Mpg). It does well with BP Fuels low grade. I wanted to buy another but SCION messed up the new xB, I would really like to buy the NISSAN CUBE when it comes out. I hope it will be as fun to drive as the xB was. I am looking forward to buying used xB’s to convert them to electric status and possibly dual fuel (battery / gas). I hope Nissan does well this little car.

  6. I think everyone here is saying the same thing. I as well love my 2005 xB but not the new one. I have been hearing about this for a few years now. Bring it on Nissan. I also think the electric 4wd is a great idea. I also have a friend who is looking for something like this in a 4wd. I hope the 09 model is coming out later this year.
