Ford Beats Toyota in Quality

You may have heard this already, and if you haven’t Ford Motor Company will make sure you hear it soon – the new J.D. Power annual initial quality survey came out earlier today and Ford actually beat out Toyota by taking more individual model quality awards than any other car company. Ford ranked highest in five segments and Toyota ranked highest in four. That’s the first time that’s ever happened.

How can this be? Have we been transported to some weird kind of parallel universe, like Bizarro World in the old Superman comics? Was there some kind of fix, was somebody paid off? Has the world gone mad?

Nope. Ford won fair and square. J.D. Power collected data from 97,000 purchasers and lessees and that’s how it went down. Now, before we get too crazy here, it’s worth noting that Toyota slipped only to No. 2 in terms of models represented, and by the barest of margins. And Ford in aggregate (that is, everything they make, not just the five models that took honors), could only manage 10th. Toyota is tied for 6th on that list, by the way, and here’s the whole list:

1. Porsche
2. Lexus
3. Lincoln
4. Honda
5. Mercedes-Benz
6. Jaguar

6. Toyota
8. Mercury
9. Infiniti
10. Ford

But, still, Ford has every right to be proud of what they’ve accomplished. And the news could not have come at a more opportune time for Ford, considering that every month brings a steady drumbeat of bad news for the beleaguered automaker. Hopefully, this will help Ford sell more cars in the next six months and maybe they can finish out the year with some respectable sales numbers, because they deserve at least a little bump in sales after the all the hard work it took to achieve these results.

Congratulations, Ford!

  1. yeah, who woulda thunk it?

  2. Fords are junk. Toyotas are great cars. Everybody who has any sense at all knows this. I owned a 1987 Ford once, and never again. Toyota is the best!

  3. Ford should now bring in the Ford Falcon from Australia – that will boost sales to go along with the increase in quality numbers.

  4. I hope Ford uses it as a springboard to more success.

  5. It seems as Toyota goes up in sales, their quality is going down. Maybe they’re having growing pains. I just read this morning that they’re thinking about recalling the new Tundra already because of engine failures. It’s a brand-new model! How many miles can the trucks have on them when the engines fail?

  6. I think ed+edna makes a superb point. In fact, as a Toyota enthusiast I have noticed a steady decrease in overall quality of Toyota’s (and Lexus’ for that matter) since the late 90’s.

In my humble opinion their the newer vehicles are quite as good as the past models (in more ways than one).
